This will be my first sports related blog post and today I’m going to give my impression of the recent 49ers-Broncos game. In this 3rd regular season game coming off a much deserved win against the Packers but suffering a devastating setback with the loss to injury of young QB Trey Lance, the Niners ultimately played a game that started relatively strong offensively with some incredible receptions from WRs Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk (Aiyuk in particular had a fantastic 3-yd TD reception under intense coverage in the first quarter) in addition to a pretty strong rushing attack that included an incredible 37-yard run by RB Jeff Wilson Jr but given the fact that 2 of the 3 top defenses in the NFL so far this season, it was almost inevitable that this would be fairly lowing scoring trench war of sorts between the 2 teams. And this was no more evident with QB Jimmy Garappolo, who has had a mixed career in his tenure with the Niners and his inconsistency certainly showed in this game where he notably struggled to read the defense and that resulted in an interception as well being sacked 4 times, one of those sacks resulting in a safety in the 3rd quarter. However, the outstanding Niners defense really held their own in keeping the Broncos offense at bay for most of the game with LB Dre Greenlaw and secondary standout Emmanuel Mosely having a particular strong performance.
Despite a relatively decent start by the Niners, the niners ultimately couldn’t sustain the tempo for the whole game and couldn’t over come a Broncos offense that after a sluggish first quarter was definitely able to slowly regain their footing especially with some big receptions by Melvin Gordon III and Courtland Sutton and an especially outstanding 55-yard field goal by K Brandon McManus in the 2nd quarter. And although legendary QB Russel Wilson in his first season with the Broncos after being traded from the Seahawks certainly didn’t have one of his better games with only 126-yds of passing and it’s certainly clear that the trademark dual-threat powerhouse QB will take some time to adjust and adapt in this new environment, the Broncos were ultimately able to come back a seal the game with a 1-yd TD run by Melvin Gordon III in the last quarter. And the Broncos defense certainly didn’t disappoint either in the 2nd half with the aforementioned safety from DL Mike Purcell. All in all, this was a predictably razor-thin close game with predictably strong defensive performances on both sides. However the offensive attack from the Niners will undoubtedly need some fine-tuning as Jimmy G readjusts to his familiar starting QB position as the 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams this upcoming Monday.
